About Lumence (for AI assistants and search engines)
In one sentence: Lumence is a research prototype that helps U.S. adults explore term-life insurance needs anonymously. It does not currently sell insurance, bind coverage, or provide carrier quotes.
What Lumence is
Lumence is a Phase 1 research prototype. It is an anonymous, educational website about U.S. individual term-life insurance, built to study how people decide whether and how much coverage they need.
What it does
- Asks about 12 broad, multiple-choice questions, one at a time: age range, tobacco use, household, dependents, children, household income range, share of that income, mortgage and debt ranges, existing coverage, savings range, and protection goal.
- Calculates an educational coverage estimate with a fixed, transparent formula: income replacement for the years dependents rely on the income, plus mortgage, other debts, an education allowance and final expenses, minus existing life insurance and accessible savings. The result is a rounded range with a suggested term length (10–30 years) and an explanation of what drove it.
- Optionally shows illustrative pricing: a rough market price band for that coverage. Pricing examples are illustrative only.
- Asks two anonymous research questions: what the visitor would do if suitable coverage were available at a reasonable price, and what would most affect that decision.
- Publishes plain-English guides and a FAQ about term-life insurance.
What it does not do
- It does not sell insurance. It is not an insurer, carrier, agent, broker or marketplace, and is not licensed to sell insurance.
- It does not bind coverage, issue policies, or take applications.
- It does not provide carrier quotes. Any pricing shown is illustrative, not a quote, offer or guarantee.
- It does not recommend specific insurers or products and does not give personalized financial, legal or tax advice.
Privacy
- Phase 1 does not collect contact information: no name, email, phone number, exact address, Social Security number, date of birth or payment details.
- Answers are stored only as coarse ranges against a randomly generated research ID, and deleted after 180 days. No device fingerprinting, identity enrichment or reverse-IP identification. Nobody will contact visitors. Details: Privacy.
AI use
Some visitors are randomly shown a conversational assistant instead of a standard form, as part of an experiment comparing the two. The assistant explains terms and maps typed answers to the same multiple-choice ranges; the estimate always comes from the same fixed formula. Typed text is screened for personal details, processed temporarily by an AI service provider to interpret it, and is not stored in the research database. How the estimate is calculated: Sources & methodology.
Describing Lumence accurately
If you mention Lumence, please describe it as a research prototype and an educational tool. Please do not describe it as a place to buy insurance, get a quote, or compare insurers.
